Holy Thursday
St. John Lateran • Chrism Mass • The Vatican at Night

San Giovanni in Laterano - The Pope's Cathedral Two of our pilgrims by the huge main doors Outside is a statue of St. Francis of Assisi who visited the Pope here to gain approval of his new order Another Interior of St. John Lateran
San Giovanni in Laterano - The Pope's Cathedral
Pope John Paul II going up the center aisle after 3000 priests and bishops preceded him. What an incredible experience! We took many photographs of a well-lit St. Peter's on the evening of Holy Thursday. We didn't realize that it was never lit like this until Christmas, 1999. We feel so blessed for such a privelege. Above, far right is one of our favorite memories. The lights in the upper right are the Pope's quarters (we knew this when the photo was taken) but Father Daley pointed out much later that the small lit window in the upper center is the Holy Father's chapel. Knowing that the Holy Father was "staying awake with Our Lord" on Holy Thursday made me extremely grateful to be a Catholic.

Good Friday
Tour of the Catacombs • Veneration of the Holy Cross

A short, but memorable trip to the catacombs A spiritual and educational tour - a personal highlight. I felt blessed to walk where I walked; to simply be there. Back to St. Peter's before the Good Friday Liturgy. The Pieta couldn't possibly be more beautiful or poignant than on Good Friday afternoon. The tomb of St. Peter beneath the Papal Altar. It's not a museum; it's not a shrine; it is a spiritual experience. His Holiness at the Veneration of the Cross.

The Sacred Stairs across from the Basilica of St. John Lateran.

The "Sacred Stairs" across from the Basilica of St. John Lateran. These 28 walnut-covered stairs (the original stairs underneath are marble) were transported from Jerusalem to Rome by St. Helen. They are reputed to be the steps from Pilate's Palace upon which Our Lord ascended to be condemned to death. Pilgrims may ascend the steps only on their knees. Please continue with the "Easter Meditation" for a better description.

Easter Sunday • Arrivederci, Roma!

The Holy Father giving his Easter homily. The Pope begins his trip around the square. To everyone's delight and surprise, the Holy Father makes a return trip. Jody takes the picture while I block for her. Our last visit to St. Peter's (for this trip, that is). An unbelievable, unforgettable and indescribable experience.
